Review and Giveaway: Stay-Dry Pockets from Oceanside Boutique

A common problem people have when using prefolds and covers to cloth diaper their baby is that the urine is not pulled away by the cotton.  It is absorbed, but not wicked away like it is when using a pocket diaper with a stay-dry inner or something similar.

That's why Oceanside Boutique is now making and selling these.  What are they?  They're stay-dry pockets! They are made from athletic wicking jersey and come in three fun colors.  You stuff the pocket with a trifolded prefold, flat, natural fiber insert or even a microfiber insert, then lay it in a waterproof cover and use the diaper like you would use any other diaper.  The stay-dry pocket wicks the moisture inside to the absorbent inner, keeping your baby's bottom dry.

The fabric used is very thin, so there is no added bulk and it's easy to fold over any excess length.

I was sent a purple stay-dry pocket to try out and review for you.  The pocket is about 15 inches long and 5 1/2 inches wide, pre-wash.  The opening is nice and wide, plenty big enough for a flat or prefold, maybe even two!

I stuffed a microfiber insert in my the pocket, and there was room to spare.

Then I folded over the excess fabric...

and put the pocket and insert in a size medium Thirsties cover.  Aww look, the colors match.

I have used my pocket several times, and it wicks the moisture away and leaves my daughter feeling as dry as our suedecloth pocket diapers so.  I like to use it for night-time use with a trifolded flat if all my fitteds are dirty.  It has held up well so far.  I haven't noticed much or any shrinking or fraying.  I would recommend these for babies with sensitive skin, and for anyone who wants to use a microfiber insert because microfiber can't go directly against the skin.  These stay-dry pockets would also be very useful when you're leaving your baby with a babysitter who may not be familiar with cloth diapers, thus not knowing when it is wet and leaving the baby in a wet diaper for a little longer than normal (Grandma, you just open it up and touch it.  If it feels wet, it is!) These pockets may not be the prettiest or fanciest things out there, but the absolutely get the job done!

  1. What a nifty idea! It should also help make prefolds less intimidating for some. :-)
